The Rocky's Autos "Pot Commercial"
Passed by ballot initiative on November 6, 2012, Amendment 64 legalized the private consumption of marijuana in Colorado and it was officially added to the state’s constitution on 12/10/12. That same day, Rocky's Autos put out a commercial, commemorating the event. It was scheduled for all local channels, including cable.
The first script, titled "Smokin'", was in development since mid-November of that same year. I was anticipating the controversy surrounding the ramifications of local vs. federal law enforcement of the Amendment. By this time Rocky's were no strangers to public strife or contention.
Besides, the characters were perfect for illuminating the surreal absurdity of it all. No matter what side you were on, you had to admit times were changing--and pointed toward the unknown.
The spot only played once, on KDVR, Channel 31 in Denver. The stations refused to air the spot, citing federal oversight on the airwaves. Whatever the excuse, the spot still has a cult following, on YouTube.
The second script I wrote--a follow-up titled, "Smokin' 2 - Jolly" brought in the familiar persona, Santa Claus. I figured I'd steer into the skid, and add a holiday twist.
I added this script in the portfolio, as many fans wanted to see what would've become of a smoky summit between Santa and the Shagman.
